WHAT: We are raising $15,000 by the end of 2018 to purchase a gently used van for Urban Harvest STL!

WHY: Food insecurity is a widespread problem in St Louis - we operate primarily in downtown and North St Louis, a particularly concentrated area of food insecurity, but food deserts and food insecure neighborhoods exist all over the city.

As Urban Harvest STL grows, we are hoping to address the needs of communities in other parts of St Louis. However, spreading our farm sites around the city will complicate how we coordinate the numerous interns and volunteers who help maintain these sites. Even with the current radius of our seven farm sites, a dedicated vehicle would significantly streamline transportation between these locations.

Purchasing a van will save:

  • GAS: Instead of driving individually between farm sites, the Veggie Van will transport all interns & volunteers in a single vehicle.

  • MONEY: We will not need to rent a vehicle for our larger projects, such as gleaning apples or transporting soil.

  • TIME: We will be able to move all tools, produce, and interns in a single vehicle, streamlining the transportation process.

  • OUR FARMERS’ PERSONAL VEHICLES: Until now, our farmers have been using their personal vehicles to transport produce, tools, and bodies between our wide network of farms, racking up mileage and wear from extensive daily use.
